Acoustic Improvements for iconic music venue in bristol
ISS Acoustic & Interior is excited to be partnering with O2 Academy Bristol, in collaboration with Academy Music Group (AMG) and LiveNation, to transform the acoustic experience inside this iconic music venue.
Opened in 2001 as the third Academy venue in the UK, the Bristol Academy has a rich history, originally part of Mecca Leisure Group’s New Entertainments Centre and later an ABC Cinema. Today, it hosts between two and six live shows and club nights per week, making it one of the city’s most active performance spaces.
Project Scope
Manufacture and install 80+ bespoke fabric-wrapped, MDF-framed acoustic absorption panels
Integrate panels seamlessly into the venue architecture, including balustrade steel frameworks, metal barriers, and upper-level walkways
Maintain the original design aesthetic while enhancing sound quality, including clearer mixes, improved bass control, and reduced echo
The internal layout of the venue presents significant acoustic challenges due to its large, open event space and the retention of original architectural features that were not designed to support modern live music performance. The volume and geometry of the main hall promote excessive reverberation, reducing speech intelligibility and musical clarity.
Additionally, the building contains a high proportion of hard, reflective materials such as exposed steelwork, metal balustrades, and untreated surfaces, which contribute to uncontrolled sound reflections and uneven sound distribution. As a contemporary music venue hosting a wide range of performances, the space must accommodate a broad spectrum of frequencies, from low-frequency bass energy to high-frequency detail, requiring substantial acoustic absorption and control to achieve consistent sound quality throughout the audience area.
Key Acoustic Issues
Large open-plan event space creates prolonged reverberation and sound build-up
Original building structure was not designed for modern amplified live music
High concentration of hard, reflective surfaces increases sound reflections
Exposed steelwork and metal balustrades contribute to flutter echo and sound scattering
Uneven sound distribution across audience zones
Excess low-frequency energy accumulation typical of live music venues
Wide range of musical frequencies requires balanced acoustic absorption
Industrial architectural character limits opportunities for conventional acoustic treatments
High occupancy variation during events affects acoustic consistency
Collaboration & Delivery
ISS will be working closely with the venue management, Academy Music Group (AMG), and LiveNation to ensure that every stage of the acoustic upgrade aligns seamlessly with the venue’s operational schedule and overall project programme. Careful coordination and detailed planning are essential, from scheduling deliveries and workforce allocation to sequencing the manufacture and installation of 80+ bespoke fabric-wrapped MDF acoustic panels across balustrades, metal barriers, and upper-level walkways.
Results & Impact
The project is designed to significantly improve show acoustics, providing a high-quality audio experience in one of Bristol’s most important music destinations while preserving the venue’s architectural character.
Josh Westaway, General Manager, O2 Academy Bristol, said: “The upgrade is hugely impressive and has transformed the entire experience at the venue. It wasn’t just for the audience but the artists as well. What we have now is a much more intimate experience for both. They are closer than ever before, and the feedback we’ve received has been great. Upgrades and innovations are a key part of our development as one of Bristol’s leading venues.”
