Acoustic Panels for CHURCH HALL, Frinton-on-sea
Frinton Free Church was experiencing significant problems with reverberation and echo within one of its main halls. The large, open space created a highly reflective acoustic environment, causing sound to build up and linger rather than being absorbed naturally.
The hall is an important community space and is regularly hired out to the public for a wide range of activities, from community groups and meetings to events involving children and older members of the community. For many of these users, excessive reverberation can make speech difficult to understand and conversations tiring to follow. This can be particularly challenging for older people and younger users, who may be more sensitive to overwhelming or poorly controlled acoustic environments.
The result was a space that could feel unnecessarily loud and stressful, particularly when several people were speaking or participating at the same time. Rather than the hall supporting communication and interaction, the acoustics were becoming a barrier to how comfortably the space could be used.
This was also having a wider impact on the church's ability to hire the space. Creating a more comfortable and intelligible acoustic environment was therefore about more than simply improving sound quality; it was about making the hall a more welcoming, accessible and usable community space.
Project Overview
Ed at Hope Cottage Studios approached us following a successful previous project together. The brief was to develop an acoustic absorption system that could significantly improve the room's acoustic performance while working sympathetically with the existing design and character of the hall. Rather than treating the room with a collection of off-the-shelf acoustic products, we were asked to develop a considered solution that would integrate with the existing space while providing enough absorption to bring the reverberation time down to a more manageable level.
The challenge was to balance acoustic performance, visual impact and practicality, creating a system that would feel like part of the room rather than an afterthought.
We looked at the existing architecture and layout of the hall to identify opportunities for introducing acoustic absorption without compromising the way the space was used. The resulting system was designed specifically around the room, allowing us to introduce a significant amount of sound absorption while maintaining the character and functionality of the existing space.
By controlling the amount of sound energy being reflected back into the room, the system helps reduce reverberation and echo, allowing speech and conversation to be heard more clearly and making the overall environment feel calmer and more comfortable. The project demonstrates how carefully considered acoustic treatment can transform a community space, not only by improving its technical acoustic performance, but by making the room more enjoyable and accessible for the people who use it.
The Solution
We designed and manufactured a bespoke combination of fabric-wrapped acoustic ceiling rafts, wall panels and deeper low-frequency absorbers to control excessive reverberation throughout the hall. The system was carefully positioned around the existing architecture, using suspended ceiling panels and wall-mounted absorption with strategic air gaps to maximise acoustic performance, while maintaining a clean and sympathetic appearance within the community space.
Results & Impact
The completed acoustic treatment transformed the way sound behaves within the space, reducing excessive reflections and helping to create a calmer, more comfortable environment for conversation and community activities.
For Frinton Free Church, the project was ultimately about creating a space that could better serve its community, making the hall more comfortable to use, improving speech intelligibility and helping to ensure it remained an attractive and practical venue for public hire.
